How Hot is Your Marriage?

We all know that the success rate for any marriage hovers around 50 percent. What most people don’t know is that the marriages that make it struggle with how satisfied they are in that relationship. This past week at Five Stones we tackled the subject of how to Stay Soul Mates with your Spouse and how to keep the flame of love hot. This past Sunday was without a doubt one of my favorite services that we’ve done. In fact I found myself at the altar during the band rehearsal just crying over what I thought God could do in the marriages of our church if we just submitted to Him. We spent the morning focusing on Song of Solomon chapter 8, especially verses 6-7.

Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm,for love is strong as death, a jealousy is fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, the very flame of the Lord. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. (SOS 8:6-7)

We drilled home the three Hebrews words for love and described those as the flashes of fire that need to be in every marriage. God created our marriages to have these three flames. It is only when these three flames our burning that our marriage flame is at its brightest. At the close of the message people were encouraged to offer God up an offering on something that needed to be changed in their life as a result of this message. They actually wrote out prayers on an index card. As they walked out the door they were to drop those cards in several fire-pits that we had around the campus. Each married couple was also given a devotional to work through that night. Each devotional had three candles that represented the three flames.
At one point during the invitation we had people four deep at the altar. It was just one of those special days where God’s presence is unmistakable. I think one of the biggest truths that was spoken was that the spouse you have is God’s best for you. I also had to gave a warning this week that children under 6th grade should not be in the service. At first no one moved until I hit SOS 8:5. Thankful that those parents took their children to Discover Factory and then came back in to hear the message. Can’t wait to hear how the marriage devotions went this week.
